Why have my texts not been restored

Hi everybody!

OK so lately my iPhone has been randomly turning itself off when it likes and it is really annoying now that it happens about 4 times an hour! Anyways I have tried repalcing the battery and it still happens so today I tried a full software restore!

I plugged my iPhone 4 into iTunes and choose the backup option, it went through 5 steps or so and said it was done! Next I wiped the iPhone and installed the latest IOS along with restoring it from the backup I had just made! Now my contacts and notes where recovered, but none of my apps, settings or text messages have reappeared!! Is this a error with the restoring process or just the texts as it is the texts I REALLY need back?
